What Makes a Good Timber Entrance Door
A front door does more work than any other piece of joinery in the house. It is opened and closed thousands of times a year, takes the weather on one face and central heating on the other, and has to lock securely every night. Bespoke Timber Windows builds each wooden front door with a 54mm thick leaf, from engineered hardwood or softwood, and hangs it in a frame made for it in the same workshop. Solid wood front doors suit Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses, 1930s semis and period-style new builds.

What Goes Into a Timber Entrance Door
A timber entrance door is a doorset: a leaf, a frame, a threshold, seals and locks that have to work together. Knowing what each part does helps you compare quotes properly, because a lower price can mean a thinner leaf, a lighter frame or a single lock.

Door leaf: A 54mm solid core leaf, built from stiles, rails and panels in engineered hardwood or softwood.

Glass in a front door has to give light without giving up privacy or security. Every glazed panel and side light from Bespoke Timber Windows uses toughened, low-E double glazing, and leaded, stained or obscure glass is available where the house style or the street calls for it.

Front Door Installation: From Enquiry to Fitting
Front door installation with Bespoke Timber Windows follows six steps, and the most important one is the survey, because an old door opening is rarely square. Your door is made and fitted 6–10 weeks after order confirmation, and our own installers carry out every step on site.

Enquiry: Tell us about the door, send a few photos and say what you want to change. We come back with a free estimate before you book anything.

Survey: We measure the opening in several places, check the threshold and template any mouldings. Booking the survey takes a 10% deposit, which comes off your final order total, so the survey is free when you order.

Quote: You receive itemised prices and a clear specification for the door, frame, glazing, locks, ironmongery and finish.

Build: Your door and frame are made, glazed and factory-finished as one doorset in our Harrow workshop.

Fitting: We remove the old door and frame, set the new frame plumb and square, hang the door, then adjust the locks and seals and finish the reveals.

Aftercare: We advise on maintenance and return if anything needs adjusting.
Entrance Doors FAQs
In most cases, yes. Every Bespoke Timber Windows entrance door has a mortice deadlock, a hook-and-bolt multi-point lock and hinge bolts. Many insurers ask for a five-lever mortice deadlock to BS 3621, so check your policy wording and tell us at survey if your insurer needs a BS 3621 lock. PAS 24 certification is available on request.
Yes. Send Bespoke Timber Windows a photo or the address and we will copy the panel layout, mouldings and glazing, then check the sizes at survey. A matching door matters most in conservation areas, where the whole terrace is expected to look consistent.
Engineered hardwood. A south-facing door takes strong sun on one face, which makes solid timber move, and laminated hardwood sections stay flatter. Bespoke Timber Windows also suggests a lighter paint colour where possible, because dark colours absorb more heat and put more stress on the finish.

A like-for-like front door replacement on a house often does not need planning permission, but the rules change if the property is listed, a flat, or in a conservation area or Article 4 area. Check with your local planning authority; we can supply drawings to support an application.
