Overview
French Doors Change How a Room Meets the Garden
French doors open the room to the garden and make the back of the house feel larger. As a French doors manufacturer, Bespoke Timber Windows makes and fits each pair as one assembly, with slimmer frames and more glass than uPVC, for period houses, semis and extensions.

What Goes Into a Timber French Door
A French door is an assembly, not a single panel: two leaves, a frame, a cill, glass and locks that have to work together. Knowing the parts helps you compare quotes from one French doors manufacturer to the next, because a lower price can mean lighter leaves or a single locking point.
-
Door leaves: Two glazed leaves built from stiles and rails, each strong enough to carry a full-height sealed unit without dropping.
-
Meeting stiles: The rebated edges where the two leaves close against each other, with a seal between them.
-
Frame: A solid timber frame, extended to take side lights or a fanlight where the design includes them.
-
Cill and weather bar: A low hardwood cill and weather bar that shed rainwater away from the bottom of the doors.
-
Glazing: Toughened double or triple glazed units in every leaf, side light and fanlight.
-
Locking: A multi-point hook-bolt lock on the master leaf and flush shootbolts top and bottom on the second leaf.
-
Handles: Espagnolette handles in lever or monkey-tail patterns, matched to the rest of your house.

Double Glazed French Doors Options

French Doors Installation Across London and the Home Counties
French doors installation needs a clean opening, a level cill and a tight weather seal, so Bespoke Timber Windows uses its own installers for every fit. We offer supply and fit, or supply only if you have your own builder. Either way, your exterior French doors are made to the same specification in our workshop.
We fit French doors across Pinner, Stanmore, Wembley, Northwood, Ealing and Barnet, and further out in Hertfordshire, Surrey and Essex.
French Doors Installation: From Enquiry to Fitting
French doors installation with Bespoke Timber Windows follows six steps, and the most important decision is made at survey: which way the doors open and which leaf you use every day. Your doors are made and fitted 6–10 weeks after order confirmation, and our own installers carry out every step on site.
-
Enquiry: Tell us about the opening, send a few photos and say what you want to change. We come back with a free estimate before you book anything.
-
Survey: We measure the opening, check the structure and advise on the opening direction. Booking the survey takes a 10% deposit, which comes off your final order total, so the survey is free when you order.
-
Quote: You receive itemised prices and a clear specification for the doors, frame, glazing, locks and finish.
-
Build: Your doors are made, glazed and factory-finished as one assembly in our Harrow workshop.
-
Fitting: We remove the old doors, fit the new pair, set the cill level and finish the reveals.
-
Aftercare: We advise on maintenance and return if something needs adjusting.
French Doors: Your Questions Answered
It depends on the room and what is outside. Outward-opening French doors save floor space inside and are the usual choice in the UK, while inward-opening doors suit a narrow patio or path. Bespoke Timber Windows advises at survey and can hang the master leaf on either side.
Yes. Bespoke Timber Windows offers a low-profile weathered cill that gives near-level access while still shedding rainwater away from the doors. It helps wheelchair users and prams, and we check the floor and patio levels at survey.
French doors are a hinged pair; bi-fold doors are a run of panels that fold and stack to one or both sides. Wooden French doors suit openings up to around 1.8m and a classic look. Bi-fold doors open almost the whole wall, so they suit wider openings and a more contemporary style. See our bi-fold doors page to compare.
Yes. Each pair of wooden French doors from Bespoke Timber Windows has a multi-point hook-bolt lock on the master leaf and top-and-bottom shootbolts on the second leaf, with toughened glass throughout. PAS 24 certification is optional.
Most French doors take 6–10 weeks from order confirmation to make and fit at Bespoke Timber Windows. That covers manufacture, glazing and factory finishing.
A like-for-like replacement often does not need planning permission, but the rules differ if the house is listed or in an Article 4 area, so check with your local planning authority. Replacement double glazed French doors must also meet building regulations; Bespoke Timber Windows is FENSA Registered, so we handle that paperwork when we fit.
