Choosing a Timber Entrance Door: Everything You Need to Know

Bespoke Editorial ·25 Apr 2025 ·9 min read

Your front door is the first thing visitors see and your home’s primary line of security. Here is how to specify one that looks right and performs.

Panel configuration

The panel layout sets the character of the door. Four- and six-panel arrangements suit Victorian and Georgian homes; a solid single panel reads as contemporary. We match the proportions to your property’s period.

Glazing

Glazed panels and side lights bring daylight into the hall. Options range from clear toughened double glazing to obscure, leaded or stained glass for privacy and period character.

Ironmongery

  • Knobs, levers, knockers and letterplates in brass, chrome, black or pewter
  • Escutcheons and numerals to complete the look
  • Finishes matched across the whole door for a considered result

Security

We fit a mortice deadlock together with multi-point locking to PAS 24 - the standard most insurers and the police Secured by Design scheme require. Hinge bolts and heavy-duty butt hinges resist forced entry.

Timber & finish

For a painted door on a sunny elevation we recommend engineered hardwood for stability, in a light-fast factory-sprayed finish. For a natural look, oak stained or oiled shows the grain beautifully.

Bring us a photo of your home and we’ll help you specify a door that fits perfectly - in style and in the opening.
