Hardwood vs Softwood

Bespoke Editorial ·20 May 2025 ·7 min read

The timber you choose shapes the look, lifespan and cost of your windows. Here is how our two options compare.

Softwood

Modern engineered softwood is laminated from selected sections, which keeps it far more stable than the solid softwood of decades past. It takes paint beautifully and offers excellent value - our most popular choice for painted windows.

Hardwood

Dense, strong and naturally durable, hardwood suits stained and oiled finishes where the grain is on show. It gives a substantial, characterful window, at a higher price point.

  • Best value: softwood
  • Best for stained or natural finishes: hardwood

At survey we’ll recommend the right timber for your budget, aspect and finish - there is no single best answer for every home.
