Installing Windows in a Conservation Area: Our Bath Project

Bespoke Editorial ·28 May 2025 ·5 min read

When the owners of a Grade II listed terrace approached us, their single-glazed sashes were draughty, rattling and rotten at the cills - but any replacement had to satisfy the local conservation officer.

Understanding the constraints

Listed building consent required an exact match to the original joinery: the same ovolo mouldings, the same slim glazing bars, and putty-line glazing rather than a modern bead. Fortunately, all of this is achievable in a bespoke workshop.

The solution

We produced new box-sash windows in engineered softwood with genuine through-glazing bars and slim 14mm double-glazed units that read as single glazing from the street. Each unit was hand-finished and factory sprayed in a heritage off-white.

  • Full listed building consent secured before manufacture
  • Like-for-like profiles approved by the conservation officer
  • Slim double glazing for a period appearance with modern efficiency

The result

The finished windows are indistinguishable from the Victorian originals - until you feel the difference in comfort and hear the silence from the street. A reminder that heritage and performance are not mutually exclusive.
