Timber windows are built to last a lifetime - but a little seasonal care keeps them looking and working their best. Set aside an afternoon each spring and run through this checklist.
The six checks
- Clean the frames. Wash painted timber with warm soapy water to remove grime that holds moisture.
- Inspect the paint. Look for hairline cracks or flaking, especially on cills and south-facing elevations, and touch up early.
- Check the seals. Compressed or perished weather seals let in draughts - they are cheap and quick to replace.
- Ease the moving parts. A little lubricant on sash pulleys, hinges and locks keeps everything smooth.
- Clear the drainage. Make sure any drainage slots in the cill are free of dirt so water can escape.
- Test the operation. Open and close each window fully; stiffness can signal a seasonal swell or a seal that needs attention.
Catching small issues early is the single best way to avoid larger repairs later. If anything looks beyond a simple fix, our maintenance team is happy to help.
